When asked by a resident for her expertise, Alison Haltom guides her design team in absorbing the nature of the project. She knows it’s important to embrace the home’s architecture as well as the client’s lifestyle before anything else takes place. Once those foundations are established, the next step is to create a feeling that will resonate throughout the home. For this Lake Tahoe cabin, the inspiration was hygge Scandinavian.

To achieve this aesthetic, Alison Haltom chose to design with contemporary black and white materials, natural wood tones, and layers of texture. Located in the Tahoe National Forest and part of the Northstar ski community, this cabin was designed as a vacation home for a family of six from the San Francisco Bay Area. It was important for the clients that the home become a retreat that promoted relaxing evenings and quality time as a family after a long day of skiing.

Alison and her team embraced the mountain feel, but not to the extent that the style became extremely rustic; they maintained a modern vibe throughout the inviting space. Furniture with cozy textures in the living area provided warmth to the black and white accents, truly inspiring family bonding time. In the kitchen, custom rift white oak cabinets lended the space a calming, woodsy feel to enjoy while cooking. Design for Living transformed this home into a welcoming and renewing place—a space that embodied hygge.
